Pressure sensitive labels (PSL) are among the most versatile and common label solutions found in the market. In the broadest sense, a pressure sensitive label is essentially a high-end sticker.
Unlike conventional stickers, pressure sensitive labels are designed with with several layers, providing increased image quality and durability. Most PSLs consist of a top coat, which the label image is printed on, facestock, adhesive, and a release liner.
Pressure sensitive labels come in rolls very easy peel off by mechanical applicators.
Pressure sensitive labels are extremely common due to their combination of low cost and high efficiency.
PSLs are used in various markets, such as household goods (e.g. home cleaners and hygiene products), food and beverages (e.g. beer, wine, spirits, sauce labels), automotive products (e.g. oil bottle labels and cleaners), chemical pails and containers (e.g. rodent baits), health products (e.g. vitamins, cleansers, and pharmaceuticals), and much more.
Pressure sensitive labels are an efficient label solution. They are highly versatile and can be used to dress many packaging types, from glass bottles to trigger sprays.
PSLs adhere to product packaging via adhesive, there is no heat, solvents, or water used in the application process.
Because pressure sensitive labels also function as high-performance stickers, they will stay in place, even acting as a permanent label solution based on your needs.
The main drawback of pressure sensitive labels is the relatively high cost compared to other label solutions. When ordering PCLs, not only do you have to pay for the cost of the label itself, but there is the added cost of the adhesive as well as the backing material used. Compare this to stretch, shrink, and cut & apply label solutions that do not use any adhesive and you will see why pressure sensitive labels tend to increase overall production cost. Additionally, because overall cost is high it can be more expensive for large bulk orders.
Pressure sensitive labels are also limited in use by the product package on which it is applied. PCLs can only be applied to flat-sided packaging. If it is going to be applied to a round surface, you are limited to applying only on cylindrical packaging and no spheres or oblong packaging.
Due to a PSL's high flexibility, there are several considerations to be made when it comes to purchasing pressure sensitive labels.
